Whiteabbey Walking Tour

I am Declan Boyle, a level 3 accredited tour guide and fully insured for all guiding activities within Northern Ireland and have also completed the “World Host” training programme.

I was born, educated, and have lived and worked in the greater Belfast area for almost 60 years. I have a particular interest and expertise in all things maritime, especially the port, the shipyard and anything that floats!

I come from 3 generations of master mariners and shipping professionals which may explain my interest!!

I am immensely proud of my city and would love to share my passion, personal experiences and history of the city and the surrounding area from an industrial powerhouse through a troubled conflict to hopefully a brighter future.

I can promise you an interesting, informative and fun tour. Humour and lots of laughter are guaranteed.

Walking, Coach, Cycling and Boat tours within the greater Belfast area would be offered however I am flexible and responsive to the needs of my guests.

I also provide voluntary tour guiding to the Belfast International Youth Hostel and Sustrans.

Guided walking tour from Whiteabbey village to Whitehouse and return

My name is Declan, a professional, locally based tour guide.

I am delighted to offer a walking tour around the seaside village of Whiteabbey .

The village and the surrounding area, offer some very interesting stories about the people, buildings, history and events that occurred in the area……. Featuring tainted wealth, a flighty lady and “Dick Whittington“ amongst many others .

I can assure you of a fun, entertaining and informative time combined with some gentle exercise.

As an extra incentive to sign up, I have offered to donate all of the proceeds ( excluding the third party booking fees) to “Alzheimers Society”

The walk takes approx. 2.5 hrs and covers about 3.5 miles

Prior booking is essential as numbers strictly limited to 12 guests in total

All tours are carried out in accordance with the current Covid – 19 guidelines and to enable social distancing a wireless guide system will be utilised.

Commencement of the first tour dates will be dependent on the approval of the NI Executive

Additional tour dates can be arranged with adequate prior notice but will require a minimum of 6 guests

Do not attend the tour if you are feeling unwell or exhibiting Covid 19 symptoms

Completed the Whiteabbey walking tour yesterday 25 April . A hugely enjoyable afternoon. Declan had the subject so well researched & delivered in an engaging and humorous manner. I even dragged the teenager along, she too thoroughly enjoyed it. Every participant was supplied with their own headphone receiver & earpiece- if needed , (all sanitised to covid standard), this was great as you never missed a word for the whole 2 hours 45 minutes. As a life long resident of the area, the history, significant events & personalities who shaped this place I call home is a real eye opener. I’ll not give anything away, rather encourage everyone to come along & enjoy a wonderful afternoon in the company of Declan.

I never knew that there had been a linen mill, two reservoirs and a toll bridge in Whiteabbey. Highly recommended. Looking forward to doing another Declan tour soon.

We spent a fantastic 2.5 hrs learning about the secret history of Whiteabbey and Whitehouse, from the huguenots through to 20th century industrialists. We have lived in the area all are lives and were amazed at the local history we had no idea about! We learned loads from Declan and really enjoyed his witty and knowledgable delivery. Would definitely recommend and we are looking forward to our next tour.

The subject is very well researched, and includes with a wealth of interesting facts and tales from the 12 th Century to the present day. Although well known to me as an area, the tour was packed with surprises on the extensive history of Whiteabbey. Old buildings, estates and long passed people all brought back to life through Declan’s detailed and humorous delivery. I would definitely recommend this Walking Tour.
