DC Tours - ‘The History of the Troubles’ is a Belfast city centre walking tour which explains the history of the Troubles and the path to peace. Starting at Belfast City Hall with an expert guide, over 2 hours and 15 minutes, you will visit seven locations where some of the most tragic events of the conflict occurred. The tour allows you to explore and understand the most turbulent period in Belfast's recent past and discover what it was like to live in Belfast during the Troubles from guides who grew up here.

Whilst walking through the Cathedral Quarter and finishing on the banks of the River Lagan, the tour will also explain the peace-building process and demonstrate the reconciliation and regeneration which has taken place in the city since the ceasefires in the early 1990s.

The tour is a way for you to get a real feel for the history of the city. Many guests say they have felt transported back in time through the rich and detailed story-telling. You will witness how far the city has come since those dark days and see Belfast in a new light.

Our guides are among the most knowledgeable conflict historians in Northern Ireland. The tour is recognised as being balanced, objective and historically accurate. It is unbiased and suitable for all visitors to Belfast, regardless of how much or little they already know of the troubled past.

It is in TripAdvisor’s Top 10 Experiences in the UK in 2019 and was Highly Commended at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards 2019 in the category ‘Authentic Northern Ireland Experience of the Year’. Our lead guide, Paul Donnelly, was named ‘Top UK Tour Guide’ at the wanderlust World Guide Awards 2019. We are the only political tour in Northern Ireland to be rated 5 stars by Tourism Northern Ireland.

The tour lasted about 2 hours and honestly, I could have walked around for another two hours listening and reflecting on what Paul was telling me. It was massively interesting, sent my head spinning with thoughts and filled me with empathy, and immensely compelling. An absolute must for any traveller who wants to get under the skin of Northern Ireland today.

Little did we realise how this tour would help us leave two days later with the city having captured a place in our hearts. I think that a visit to Belfast and this tour is a must for every single person in Britain, to see and hear the story of the troubles in what is a corner of their nation.
